Described as "stellar" and "an instant classic", the Clarinet Sonata is one of the major chamber music works by Galician-American composer Octavio Vazquez. Commissioned by clarinetist Enrique Perez Piquer and the Via Stellae International Festival, it was premiered at the 2010 Festival by Mr Piquer and pianist Anibal Bañados. The US premiere followed shortly after, in 2011, by clarinetist Julian Milkis and pianist Adam Kent, at New York's Carnegie Hall. Structured in four movements, it interweaves diverse popular, classical and folkloric elements into a unique musical fabric.

The Sonata for Viola and Piano no. 2 was written in 2002 for violist Viacheslav Dinerchtein. In Spring of 2003, it was one of the winning pieces at the Prokofiev International Competition in St. Petersburg, where it was performed by Vladimir Bistritsky of the Nevsky String Quartet. Mr. Dinerchtein premiered the sonata in New York later that year at the Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall, accompanied by pianist Eldar Nebolsin. Described by New York critic Mark Greenfest as “...a Sephardic Kol-Nidre...a full spectrum of emotion...not for the faint-hearted”, at the core of the piece are the events that took place in mid Europe in the 40’s, especially the Holocaust. Written in five movements, each one delves into a particular set of thoughts and emotions, from extreme sorrow, fear and anguish, to moments of madness, dissociation, utter exhaustion, and ultimately death.

Commissioned in 2006 by the Guernica Project, this piece tackles some of the most traumatic moments in the recent history of Spain. On April 26th 1937, a massive air raid by combined German and Italian forces obliterated the Basque town of Guernica in Northern Spain. Never before in history had a civilian population been attacked from the air with the intent of producing total destruction. By May 1st, news of the massacre reached Paris, bringing about the largest May Day demonstration the city has ever known, and inspiring one of Pablo Picasso's most famous paintings. Today, Picasso's 'Guernica' stands as one of the most powerful anti-war statements of the twentieth century. The 'Gernika' trio is a monumental five-movement piece, already widely considered a major addition to the classical piano trio repertoire. Simultaneously eclectic and sober in its approach, it incorporates numerous references to traditional music and quotations from well known Civil-War-related melodies.
